Traditional techniques of the Samurai sword and the wooden staff have been a source of inspiration for present day Ki Aikido. The beautiful round, elegant and light movements of the sword have also given an aesthetic quality and harmony to its techniques.
This harmony and no-violence is symbolized by the wooden bokken that we use instead of the steel Katana. As you can read in the History section, this wooden sword became the symbol for a peaceful practice of traditional techniques. The essence of Ki Aikido is practicing harmony in situations of tension and conflict. Moreover, we value its refined aesthetics: the techniques should be effective but also harmonious and beautiful.
